TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen review

If you're LYNKtec, how do you follow up the incredibly well received TruGlide Stylus for iPad? If you answered with a TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen, then you're absolutely right. The TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen takes everything that was great about the original, and doubles the functionality by adding a traditional ink pen to the new fangled capacitive pen. And it does it with balance and style.

First, I just have to say that the box the TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen comes in is really nice. Sure, it looks a bit like Dracula's coffin, but I'm absolutely going to keep it to store earrings in.

As with the original TruGlide Stylu, the TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen uses woven capacitive fibers making for a very different feel than regular stylus pens -- stronger, more durable, and not as mushy. I've already gone on at length about it in my original TruGlide review, and much of that applies for this new model as well.

I'll explain -- no, no, there is to much -- I'll sum up. The capacitance is very good, and remains one of the best I've tested. But... this one has a slightly crunchy sound when you press down on it. I can't really explain it. It's just... crunchy. Watch the video, you'll hear it.

The new news here is the traditional ink pen. And LINKtec certainly didn't cheap out here. The writing experience is great and the ink flow is smooth and consistent. There's a well constructed cap to keep the pen from leaking when not in use, and everything is just really well built and balanced. And even with all of that, the stylus and the pen, it remains exceptionally light.

The good

  • Durable woven tip
  • Good capacitance
  • Nice design
  • Includes traditional ink pen

The bad

  • Not as consistently precise as some other pro-level stylus

The conclusion

If you just want a stylus, the less expensive, single-porpose TruGlide, or one of the other pro-level stylus pens will serve you well. If you need a traditional pen as well as a stylus, however, the TruGlide Duo Stylus Pen is the way to go. It's my favorite combination stylus pen to date.

Microsoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in Skype

Microsoft launches Outlookcom, a new email service with few ads, nearly unlimited storage

So Microsoft launched a new email service today -- not a redesigned version of Hotmail, but a completely new, built-from-the-ground-up service. It's called Outlook.com, and for now, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail, as Microsoft attempts to distance itself from Hotmail's bad rap. As it happens, the email features are basically the same across the two services, but from a visual standpoint, Outlook.com is everything Hotmail is not: where Hotmail has distracting banners and video ads, Outlook's are discreet. Indeed, you won't find any targeted ads on conversations with individual people (newsletters and such are still fair game). In lieu of those creepy personalized ads, you'll see quick access to Twitter and Facebook, where you can retweet and like things, as well as post comments. Skype integration is coming too (finally!), though that feature isn't live today. Most importantly, though, it brings a fresh, minimal interface designed to lure away Gmail users who wouldn't have otherwise given Hotmail the time of day.

Outlook.com is open to the public starting today. You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address. Though it's still in its preview phase, anyone can sign up (read: no invites necessary). Storage is "virtually" unlimited -- Microsoft doesn't want to promise potential spammers a limitless account -- and anyone creating a Microsoft account for the first time gets the usual 7GB of complimentary SkyDrive storage. Hit up that source link if you want check it out yourself, and then head over to our in-depth preview for detailed impressions and screenshots galore.

Sprint EVO 3D finally getting its Ice Cream Sandwich update

EVO 3D ICS update

Top o' the morning, folks! It looks like the Sprint HTC EVO 3D has begun getting its update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. That's according RockLight from ye olde Android Central forums, and other folks are seeing updates as well. We're not quite being inundated with reports of updates yet, so this could just be the initial trickle, or perhaps folks are just sleeping in, or gave up and went the custom ROM route already. Looks like folks are waking up and seeing this one across the board. The timing's right, as Sprint had said to expect it by early August.

As a reminder, here's what's new:

  • A refined, evolved user interface that is simple, beautiful and useful
  • Face Unlock: use state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with a smile
  • Redesigned camera app which introduces Scenes like Panorama, and Effects such as Vignette, Depth of Field, Vintage and Posterize
  • Web browser now lets you sync Google Chrome™ bookmarks, request full desktop versions of sites, see your open tabs in a new layout
  • People: browse friends, family and coworkers, see their photos in high-resolution and check their latest status updates from Google+
  • Improved keyboard with incredibly accurate typing, an inline spell checker and improved copy and paste support
  • Redesigned Gmail™ app that now lets you swipe between conversations to catch up quickly and search for emails even without a data connection
  • Google+ integration that lets you hangout and video chat with up to 10 friends using your front-facing camera

So, be on the lookout for a 300-megabyte or so update, and try not to let your HTC Rezound-toting friends see you gloat too much.

TuneIn to the Good New Radio Days

It wasn't too long ago that you'd have to pore over shortwave radio schedule listings, cross referencing time of day, with frequency in kilohertz, in order to listen to long range, overseas broadcasts -- picking out the words from the spooky radio harmonics. Then along came the Internet, which allowed for a continuous stream of mellifluous programming to be place-shifted anywhere.

Three new commercials focused on the Apple Store Genius debut during Olympic Games opening ceremonies

Apple airs three new Genius based commercials during the Olympic Games opening ceremony

Apple aired three new style commercials during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games; which is currently being held in London. The new style commercials are quite cheeky and unlike anything we have seen from Apple before. They are quite tongue in cheek and show a blue shirted Apple genius in each advertisement, coming to the rescue of customers.

  • Basically shows the Apple Genius laughing at not-Macs (Windows) and showing the customer all the add-on value of using a Mac.
  • Labor Day shows an expectant Father knocking on the Genius's door at 4am; asking for assistance with a birth announcement card even as he should be calling the hospital.
  • May Day is set on a plane with the Genius coming to the aid of a customer who has forgotten his anniversary and asks for help making an iMovie.

The new style ads, with a touch of humor, are certainly different to the recent ads we have seen from Apple. Having said that, Apple has often tried to inject a bit of humor into its commercials; the “Get a Mac” commercials were hugely successful when they were aired.

The new ads are all embedded below for your viewing pleasure. When you have watched them, let us know what you think. Do they encourage you to consider a Mac or a visit to an Apple Store?
