Next Apple earbuds potentially sighted in Vietnam, may fix an iconic design (video)

The pack-in earbuds for iPhones and iPods have been among the most recognizable of technology symbols for more than a decade... just not for their technical merits. They're notorious for slipping out of wearers' ears and having a mediocre sound next to just about anything else you can buy. If Tinhte's own discovery in Vietnam is authentic, Apple might be breaking with another one of its longstanding traditions this year by redesigning those earpieces for the better. Gone are the usual buds that only vaguely aim towards your ear canals. Instead, what's on show has oval tips very loosely resembling those of the Klipsch Image S4 II, and slots in at an angle to fit more directly into the canals -- not to mention more comfortably, based on early tests. We can't guarantee that these headphones are more than just the products of an ambitious third-party manufacturer, but Tinhte has had a good track record for snagging pre-release Apple gear, and that "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in Vietnam" lettering would reduce the possibilities to either a good KIRF or the real thing. One way or the other, we could know the truth soon enough.

If you had a bunch of purported 2012 iPhone 5 parts lying around, wouldn't you want to slap them together and line them up, Usual Suspects style, beside a 2011 iPhone 4S (with color modifications) and a 2009 iPhone 3GS? That way you could see who was the tallest, who was the thinnest, and who absolutely had the most metal on its back plate. Well, that's exactly what the folks at iColorOS have done.

If these parts are accurate, there are no huge surprises here. The iPhone 5 shows off its 4-inch, 16:9, 1136x640 screen and the extra casing height to support it. It also shows off it's slightly svelter profile, its new armor plating on the back, and its newly centered FaceTime camera. Other than that, it's just parts porn at the moment. That's not to say it isn't good parts porn, but if you want a lasting relationship with an iPhone 5, you'll still have to wait for an introduction on September 12, and then pick one up on September 21.

Because of it's open grip design, all the buttons and ports remain easily accessible on your iPad. Depending on their age and how far back the front seats are, passengers in the back can reach the Home button and touch screen interface to choose what they want to watch, and control volume and playback as well. If you have an AC adapter in the back, the Dock port can be plugged in to keep your iPad charged while you're driving, and the kids are watching. Overall, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit is easy to install, easy to use, and does just what you need it to do -- keep backseat passengers entertained while you're on the road. But here's the thing -- I’m not a fan of keeping my kids entertained through zombifying videos. I think the value of being together and enjoying a journey together is far, far more important. Singing, puzzling, talking, and otherwise being together without the typical distractions of our modern, digital lives is something that we enjoy as a family.

However, there are times, especially on long trips, where a little bit of video goes a long way to keeping the kids happy, and giving the drivers and other up front passengers a little peace and quiet on the road.
